jethro gibbs

professor dinozzo's film class

  • Gibbs has seen Air Force One, and name checks Harrison Ford. And gets kind of excited about it. (1.1)
  • Gibbs makes a reference to the Jack Lemon movie The Apartment. (1.10)
  • Kate asks Gibbs if he ever saw Robert Redford in Three Days of the Condor, and Gibbs says he has. (1.11)
  • Abby references Mini Me from Austin Powers, and Gibbs actually knows what she’s talking about. (3.7)
  • Gibbs references Mr Wizard. (3.11)
  • Gibbs references Who Shot Rebecca? (4.5)
  • Gibbs references Gold Rush. (5.6)
  • Gibbs references Patton. (5.11)
  • Gibbs is watching some black and white western movie at home. (8.3)
  • Gibbs references John Wayne and Gary Cooper. He thinks he’s Gary Cooper. (8.4)
  • Gibbs says he loves Phoebe Cates. (8.8)

18 different ways...

  • Ziva throws a knife to kill the woman about to shoot Ducky, and then subdues two other offenders. When Gibbs and Tony arrive just afterwards, Tony mutters, “Remind me not to piss her off”. Gibbs replies, “Oh, DiNozzo, you have no idea.” (3.4)
  • Gibbs hands Ziva a knife and directs her towards the FBI car that’s outside watching them. “Got it,” Ziva says gleefully, and heads off. Gibbs stops her. “Ziva! Their tires, not their throats.” (5.14)
  • Gibbs says that you have to be more careful of Ziva’s bite than her bark. (8.17)

that's not my name

  • Gibbs, Tony and Viv go undercover in Rota, posing as produce buyers at a wharf. (J.A.G. 8.21)
  • Gibbs goes undercover as a gunny sergeant at a Marine recruitment shopfront. (1.13)
  • Gibbs goes undercover as a gunny sergeant in the Pentagon. (2.1)
  • Gibbs pretends to be ‘regular’ guy in a beige jacket and old guy hat. (4.7)
  • We get flashbacks to Gibbs and Jenny undercover in Paris. She’s in a black wig. (5.18)
  • There are plenty more references to Gibbs and Jenny’s operation in Paris that was the beginning of the whole affair that got Jenny killed. (5.19)

age is just a number

  • Tony says that a 37-year-old agent is “considerably” younger than Gibbs, to which Gibbs takes offence. When Tony asks how old Gibbs really is, Gibbs refuses to answer. Tony accuses him of being embarrassed, and Gibbs snaps “Not at all”. He totally is. Especially when he has difficulty reading a file, and Tony starts to comment that, “After 40, everybody’s eyes—“ It’s as far as he gets before Gibbs glares him into silence. (1.5)
  • When Director Morrow guesses that Gibbs did a tour with the Corps in Vietnam, Gibbs says he’s not that old. Just barely, love. You don’t need to get quite so defensive. (3.1)
  • Gibbs was about 18 in 1976, so he was born in about 1958. That makes about as much sense as Ziva being born in 1982, but at least the insanity is consistent for this show. (6.4)

wait, what?

  • Okay, I don’t know what this is about, but when Gibbs gets out of the car to go talk to Julie Benz, he’s doing his pants up. As in they’re all the way open when he gets out of the car, and he has to tuck in his shirt, button, pull up the zip and fasten his belt buckle. (1.22)
  • Apparently the first time Gibbs saw Shannon was when he was 18. I find this a little hard to believe, since she was working in a shop a few doors down from his dad’s in a small town. Seems a reach to think that he had never run into her before. (6.4)
  • Gibbs was born in about 1958, which is probably about five or six years too late for what his birth year should be. (6.4)
  • Despite only knowing Gibbs for a day, ADA Walsh drives over to his house and walks right in without knocking. There’s got to be a sign on the door, right? Door’s open, come on in! (8.10)
